And Bret Strikes Again!

Travis Frank

bborth%20006.jpgThe last time Bret and I hit the water together, we managed to boat 3 muskies in a trip that got cut short due to the weather.  One of which was Bret's largest at a very healthy 48'.  While those memories were shared yesterday morning with Tim, we didn't exactly have plans to repeat that success.  Our mission was to start out the morning by boating a few walleyes and then switching over to the ol' Bucketmouths.  Well, we did do as planned, but as you can see from the pic, we also did a little unplanned dancin with the toothy critters.  Our morning started by catching roughly 10 walleyes, which was pretty good action considering the intense wind.  They weren't quite the size that we were looking for, but Bret took home some fresh walleye fillets for dinner.  borthski.jpgWe then switched over to bass, but with the tornadic strength winds we were dealing with, it made it quite challenging to strategically place our casts.  We landed a few bass including a nice one by Tim, and dealt with the wind the entire time.  The great part about the style of bass fishing that we were doing, is that we were working a couple of my favorite muskie spots on the lake and giving ourselves the opportunity to do battle with a trophy of another kind.  The first time we encountered a muskie on our lighter than normal muskie gear, the muskie won, and left me to retie another lure.  The second time we encountered a toothy critter, it couldn't have gone any better.  The battle was won by Bret, and it was quite the battle at that.  First of all, I took out my gigantic net to make room for the finesse fishing, which forced us to land this fish in a very different matter.  bborth%20001.jpgSecondly, and the best part of the story, was that this muskie was spotted before it even ate the bait.  As Bret would put it, there is nothing better than seeing it before the attack, and observing the entire strike.  And lastly, it was battled on lighter gear than my normal musky fishing tackle.  According to Bret, it beat the intense battle that he encuontered with me last year when he landed his 48 incher.  While this muskie wasn't as large, the 43 incher will always be remembered as the one that he watched eat the bait and somehow got in the boat.  While we didn't plan on landing the muskie this way, it definitely is quite common to entice them on lighter tackle this time of the year.  There are a few baits that seem to work really well for me, and they are also my favorite bass baits.  It only makes sense to throw them this time of the season and give ourselves the opportunity for a little bonus action.  Truly a fun morning on the water, and I cannot wait to do it again fellas.  Thanks for the fun time, and until next time, Keep on Livin the Dream!

WOOHOO!!! It's Musky Season!

Travis Frank

spr07%20008.jpg

Well it's about time huh!  Musky season opened this past Saturday here in our wonderful musky state, and for yet another year, I didn't target my favorite specie.  I have been so darn consumed by trying to keep on the ever changing walleye bite, that I haven't thrown the big baits....that is until last night.  After having my fill of chasing the unpredictable walleye bite the last week or so, I decided to get after the big boys.  Our lake of choice on this outing was obviously Waconia, since that was where we were trying for the Walleyes at the time.  It wasn't long into the casting that I had the first follow of the year, and it was one of those fish that we all had a chance at catching.  The darn 42 incher chased all three of our lures boatside once we were doing our figure 8's.  Kinda cool, but it didn't eat!

spr07%20011.jpgAfter about 40 more casts a piece, we got closer to a spot that I typically see them, and we were hooked up for the first time in 07'.  WooHoo!  Nothing spectacular in size, but it is always great to get the first one of the year.  Dusty took a nice picture (by nice I mean that the fish looked good, not necessarily his hair, haha, sorry Dusty but I have to) and we were back at it again.  Before our stretch of water was complete, we saw another fish and then moved on.  Not too darn bad to see 3 nice fish and land one in about an hour of feeeeshin.  Since my walleye season is still going, and I had scratched the itch that I had to get me a snaggle tooth muskie, we grabbed our spinning gear and went back to the Willies.

spr07%20014.jpgMuch to my delight, the couple day drought of loosing the battle to the changing walleye pattern and the confusing weed growth on the lake, We scored on a new bite.  We caught a few really nice walleyes right before it was time to head in along with a few other fish including bass, crappies, sunnies and sheephead.  A good day to say the least, and something positive to write about.  I returned to lake this morning to make sure my new walleye pattern wasn't a fluke, and caught about a dozen walleyes as fast as I could get my fathead to the bottom.  Don't worry, I let them all go for the guys coming out in the next few days.   They are going again fellas!  WooHoo!

I have been hearing from a lot of you guys lately about your experiences, and I just want to share with everyone what some of our fellow anglers are catching.  I would love to keep sharing everyones stories and pictures, so please keep sending them my way and i'll get them on the world wide web for everyone to see.  The first picture is from Mr. Douglas himself.  He landed a nice Ski a few days back while fishing for the elusive and mighty bluegill.  Quite the shock when the drag started to scream I am sure.  Nice fish Doug!

The next awesome pic is from a true muskie man in the making named Jake Bohnsack.  We have shared several emails since I met him on the dock last spring, and from the looks of what I have been receieving, he is getting some fish in the boat.  He was up north for the muskie opener this past weekend with a fishing buddy by the name  of Paul Schlagel.  So I just want to give a shout out to them, especially Jake for his new personal best at 46.5 and also landing a 43.  Nice work!  Keep the pics and stories coming fellas.  I love reading and seeing them, and so does the rest of the world.  until next time, Keep on livin the Dream!43_and_46_5_muskie_015.jpg

2nd Annual "Take A Boatload Of Girls Fishing Day"

Travis Frank

pichers 011.jpgSunday was the 2nd annual take a boatload of girls fishing day, so we did just that.  pichers 007.jpg  With high hopes from the great success last year, these girls couldn't wait to get their lines in the water and see what would bite on it.  I was joined by Becky, Phyliss, Gina, Jitla, Amanda and Heidi.  With the boat loaded to the max, we were somewhat limited to what we could fish for, which brought out the jigs and leeches.  The sunfish were eager to take a hold and gave us plenty of action.  pichers 010.jpg  Although the weather wasn't the best for Walleyes, we did try a great spot of mine, and Gina (the fishing pro) managed to land a nice one.  All in all, the weather was amazing, the fish were biting and it was yet another great time on the water.   Thanks for all the tangled lines and hectic running around.  pichers 005.jpg  Can't wait to do it again next year!!!

Bass'n on Waconia

Travis Frank

fuckin fish pictures 005.jpgSaturday morning brought us out onto Lake Waconia for a friendly bass tournament with a bunch of buddies.  It is the 2nd annual tournament for friends of ours, which decided that they didn't feel the need to show up for their own event.  This proved to be their own loss because the bite was going and many large bass were brought in by all the boats including these two beauties that Mike landed.  It was a great day on the water for Mike, Tara and Myself.    We didn't  win, but in this event it is all about the fun we have competing in the friendly outing.  The only downside for us on this day was Tara's inability to land the big one.     fuckin fish pictures 004.jpgAs you can see she definitely was giving it her all, but the fish just didn't want to cooperate.  Next time fishies!!!

Oh Yes, There Is More

more fishing pics 024.jpgSorry for the delay in finishing this story, but here is the rest of the trip.

After the tournament was over on Saturday, Mike and I wasted no time in heading south.  He headed for home, and I headed to Mille Lacs for 4 more days of fishing.  This time of the year can be brutal on the big pond for the simple fact that extreme sun and heat can cause for long and agonizing hours on the water.  The next four days proved to be just that.  During those days on the water clouds were an extreme rarity along with absolutely no wind.  The sun however, was always there and very very hot (brutal).

Saturday night Mike Ernst came up to fish the evening and morning on Sunday, so as the sun was fading we ventured out onto the water to try our luck at the dusk bite as well as into the darkness.  Our thoughts were proven to be correct.  The fish that we were seeing were lazily sitting around with no thoughts of chasing a bait.  We planned on having things turn around after dark, but once the daylight slipped away, all hell broke loose on the bug factor and fishing was not even close to possible.  They were not mayflies, but they were similar and they came by the billions, literally.  It was the biggest bug hatch that I have ever witnessed in my life, which quickly ruled out any night fishing for the rest of my trip, which was a huge blow during this heat.

Sunday morning we hit the water at first light.  We saw close to 20 muskies early, with two fish being hooked, and several other close calls.  We managed to loose both hooked fish which was unfortunate, but the action was there.  We switched gears by 8:00 AM and targeted the smallies for a while, then switched to my infamous shallow water walleye bite for some sight fishing for the big ones.  This worked, but as the sun got higher, we couldn't take the heat and called it a day.

After a fairly good morning on Sunday my hopes were still pretty high for my guests Don Murray and Ed Benecke who traveled many miles to battle the big ones.   Monday morning was our first time on the water.  The conditions were terrible to say the least, but we saw many fish early on with some close calls, but no muskies in the boat.  One of the best parts about fishing muskies on Mille Lacs is the bonus large northern pike that swim this water.  Don managed about a 37" which was the highlight of the morning.  To escape the heat, Don and Ed decided to hide indoors during the heat of the day, and return for the evening bite that we hoped would take place.  This turned out to be a mistake on this particular day, because a brief gust of wind and clouds came through and the fish turned on for myself .  I boated a 45" muskie which doesn't really have the same appeal when fishing by my lonesome.  By the time these boys could get back out on the water, the clouds were gone and the lake turned into glass again.  At the end of day one we managed to see nearly 40 different fish, catching one and having 3 others find their way off the line.

Day 2 was more of the same for us.  It was very frustrating to have so many large fish swimming around the areas we were fishing only to have them watch the lures go by as if they weren't even there.  With night fishing not even being an option, we were forced to fish the heat and hope for the best.  We didn't land any muskies on Tuesday, which was a total bummer, and we even got to see the nasty side of Mille Lacs.  Our evening got cut short due to a very large and intense storm that came in a couple of hours before dark.  With hopes high from a big front moving in, we tried to fish till the bitter end in hopes of landing a quick one before the rain and wind hit, but it just made our drive back to the landing a lot more interesting.  The lake went from complete glass to 4 footers in a matter of 30 seconds as 50 mph gusts came tearing in.  The only positive to this front was that we were able to witness the most intense and amazing rainbow any of us had ever seen.  With all of the unfortunate turn of events that took place we all decided that we would skip our morning excursion and cut our losses.  With the weather being so unbearable, it made for very tough fishing on all of us.  Not all trips end with a ton of fish, but that didn't take anything away from the fun that Don, Ed and myself had on our days on the water.  These gentlemen were truly class act individuals, which made for many great stories and laughs.  Thanks for the fun time guys and I cannot wait to do it again!more fishing pics 045.jpg
