Whitetail Season is on!!

In the midst of all the work that I have been doin, I told myself that I had to make it our for the 2009 Whitetail firearm season!! Usually by this time of year, I have been out in a tree holding a bow about 20 times and again as many times chasing waterfowl! This year, 3 times chasing whitetails and 2 times chasing the ducks!! Horrible! I can't stand it!! And that new boat of mine hasn't seen water in I don't know how long!!
Well I made it out this past saturday and had quite the eventful morning! It started out with a small spike coming straight at me from in front. While watching him, I heard steps from behing me. I slowly turned and there about 30 feet from me was a forkhorn getting all aggressive towards this spike! He was acting like he was king of the woods! His hair was giving a standing ovation, his ears were laid straight back, and his small antlers were now his weapons! He slowly side stepped half way around the spike, not having a clue that he was going to be my entertainment for the morning! He then let out a snortwheeze right at the spike! For those who don't know what that is, it is a blow/whistle that means "I wanna Kick your butt now!! Do you want any of this!?!" Deer will respond in one of 2 ways, either they will charge and start a fight, or the one being challenged will realize it is not worth it and leave. Unfortunately the spike was determined that he was going to lose this battle and trotted off in defeat. Very cool to see though! About an hour after that a small 6 pointer decided to show himself and trot about 40 yards in front of me. Nothing big, but a fun morning in the stand!
That evening just yielded a small spike again. Sunday morning was the morning to be out! It all started with a deer running around grunting like crazy about 50 yards infront of me. Unfortunately it was about 20 minutes before shooting time and cloudy, so the darkness blinded me to the point where he was just a ghost in my imagination. About a half hour later, another came down the same path. This one had his nose to the ground and was trotting around like a kid playing hide n seek!! He was just going back and forth like crazy!! It had a pretty big body, but the low light was still hiding the rack from me. Just as it was about to head back up into the woods, I grunted at him. He pulled a u-turn and immediately headed in my direction! Just as he was closing in on about 60 yards, another deer came down the hill. The one coming my way, turned and looked at the new deer and lowered his head and immediately charged! He chased the less dominant buck away and the little fork ran right by me!
I then realized that it was the same fork from the day before and I ckuckled to myself because he wasn't so tough anymore! Still I couldn't see a rack on the deer that was out there. He listened to my grunt and again started walking in my direction. At about 40 yards, I got a glimpse of a nice rack just for a second. He then turned sideways and I could make out a few tines that were pretty high. I then decided to slowly squeeze the trigger. As the woods fell silent, as did my prize about 30 yards from where he was hit. I was super excited to see what I had and was extremely happy when I approached him! He ended up being a nice mainframe 8 pointer with a 2 and a half inch sticker and another 1 and a half inch sticker. I am going to call it a ten pointer!!! What a great couple of days to enjoy Gods creation in its natural state in the woods!! One of the coolest things to experience!! I even got this little squirrel in action! Until next time, Keep Livin' your Dream!!!
